I wonder how would Checkmate! (Koltanowski & Finkelstein) compare with How to beat your dad or Checkmate patterns.

Is it just me, or are a bunch of these checkmate busted? I put a couple of random ones in an engine and they were not checkmates. I think if you say "this is a checkmate" it should meet the level of correctness of a chess study. There could be multiple solutions, I suppose, but they all have to be checkmate. Did anyone else see this? Am I off base?

Julian,

I remember that in many cases the mate isn’t forced, but that the resulting position after avoiding the mate is so up material that the losing side may as well resign.
